Though it was something I originally did not pay much attention to, nor really enjoy, I now find that backgrounds can tell as much of a story as the actual characters. Just like them, they have can personalities and tell a story through their appearance. Small details, colors, and textures all add up to create an instantly readable scene which can be just as beautiful as the writing, acting, score, or any other element within animation or illustration. I particularly enjoy wear and tear that tells a story within a place. How tables are scuffed, the way things hang on walls, or the items a person decorates their home with are all just as appealing as character designs. I like making worlds and luckily, the more I do it, the more I find it rewarding.
